The Many Facets of Kantian Freedom

The concept of freedom has notoriously eluded easy definition. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). Kant famously created an ambitious philosophical system comprising theories of epistemology, morality, politics, aesthetics and more. In each of these areas, Kant formulates the meaning of freedom differently, from the categorical imperative to aesthetic free play. This presentation will introduce the major models of freedom as they appear in Kant’s philosophical system, in order to showcase the complexity of this difficult philosophical category while providing a survey of Kant’s rich and challenging body of work.

Samuel Heidepriem: Samuel Heidepriem is a postdoctoral fellow in Tsinghua's Institute for World Literatures and Cultures. He earned his PhD in German from the University of Michigan in 2017. His research focuses on German literature and philosophy from the Enlightenment to the present, political theory, and intellectual history. His published and forthcoming work includes articles on Kant, Hegel, Friedrich Schiller and Carl Schmitt.
範大邯: 先後于北京大學和德國圖賓根大學獲得哲學碩士和博士學位。任教于beat365哲學系。以康德哲學、德國古典哲學、當代實踐哲學和美學為研究重點。
